Mascherano is set to leave Liverpool

Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano has met with Liverpool executives and made known his desire to leave Anfield this summer. Although the decision was expected, it is still a massive blow for the club, who had a disastrous campaign last season. Inter Milan is believed to be the next destination for Mascherano, who has already started learning Italian and is keen to reunite with former manager Rafael Benitez.
New manager Roy Hodgson has said that Mascherano's desire to leave does not necessarily mean he will move. "He is a Liverpool player and will continue to be treated as a Liverpool player until such a day arrives when he no longer is. "The mere fact that the player is a little bit unhappy with his situation and would prefer to leave does not necessarily mean that he will do. It disappoints me but it is not unusual. I think in every club throughout the world there are players playing in the team who would prefer to leave."
Mascherano is just another example of an increasingly disturbing trend of spolied players who try to dictate their terms to the club and force a move. Like Cristiano Ronaldo, Mario Balotelli, Cesc Fabregas, and many others, Mascherano fails to realize that no single player is bigger than the club as a whole. For the money they earn, players should show loyalty to their club so long as the club treats the player with respect.
